I love sunburst mirrors. Truly. There is a reason they are so popular and get used so much, and it's because they provide that bit of drama that sets the room/wall apart. I have been looking for a sunburst mirror for our bedroom for a while now, and have found several that would be lovely, however, their price tag was not so lovely.
I wanted more of an antiqued silvery gold one, and since shelling out a few hundred dollars for the mirror was NOT in the decorating budget this month, I decided to make my own. I found a great tutorial online here, and pretty much followed the directions, with a couple of adjustments. If you want to do this on your own, this is what you will need:
I bought 2 packs of large cedar shims at Home Depot, 2 floral rings at Michael's Crafts, an 8" round mirror tile, a lot of hot glue, and some spray paint.
Trying to decide on the color of spray paint took me the longest, but did you know you can spray paint the floor at Home Depot to test out the color? It's pretty awesome, you should try it.
I wanted the mirror to be 26" in diameter, so I cut down my shims to 8 1/2"long with a miter saw and laid out my first round of sunbursts.
After placing them where I wanted, I hot glued them to the 2 floral rings and then began a second round of the sunbursts. These were glued as the second layer, and I continued until I had about 4 layers.
Then I spray painted it gold (more of an antiqued look, not so garish-gold) and let it dry over night.
I glued the mirror tile to the center with this really smelly glue for mirrors/glass, and then stood back to admire my work!
This is when I realized that the mirror would not work for above my bed. Oops. It was just too rustic looking for what I was going for in the bedroom. However, it does look spectacular above the mantle in the basement! What do you think? Have you tried making a sunburst mirror lately?
