Le Bedroom~finishing touches

My bedroom has never been quite complete.  It's one of those rooms in the house that doesn't get seen by other people often, so it was easy to let it fall by the way side while I worked on more public rooms in my house.  I started off strong, and then just kind of fizzled (how common is this, can I get an amen?)  That is about to change.  I'm feeling restless about the state of said room.  Poor thing.  For years it has been just the basics.  Don't get me wrong, I love the basics.  Creams and whites and grays and purples.....so serene and classy, but never quite finished.  It needs some life and POP in the room.  For a while I've been pinning bedrooms I like that have a bright pop in them somewhere and here are a few.
Love the bold floral on the pillows!  Designers Guild Orangerie is so beautiful!

I absolutely love the color palette Katie Rosenfeld used for this bedroom! The lilac, celadon, gold and orange is perfection.

The artwork over the nightstand is spectacular.  Just a framed piece of fabric--what a great idea!

Like I said, my color palette right now is grayish purple, white and cream.  I've been looking for a fabric to bring in a bright punch of color, and then yesterday I spotted this beauty at Joann's!

It has this watercolor-like aesthetic to it, like it's been painted on a piece of silk.  SO LOVELY.  I think it might be just the thing to add to the room.  The question is, should it just be shams, or a duvet?  Thoughts?

Sunburst Mirror

I love sunburst mirrors.  Truly.  There is a reason they are so popular and get used so much, and it's because they provide that bit of drama that sets the room/wall apart.  I have been looking for a sunburst mirror for our bedroom for a while now, and have found several that would be lovely, however, their price tag was not so lovely.
I wanted more of an antiqued silvery gold one, and since shelling out a few hundred dollars for the mirror was NOT in the decorating budget this month, I decided to make my own.  I found a great tutorial online here, and pretty much followed the directions, with a couple of adjustments.  If you want to do this on your own, this is what you will need:

I bought 2 packs of large cedar shims at Home Depot, 2 floral rings at Michael's Crafts, an 8" round mirror tile, a lot of hot glue, and some spray paint.

Trying to decide on the color of spray paint took me the longest, but did you know you can spray paint the floor at Home Depot to test out the color?  It's pretty awesome, you should try it.
I wanted the mirror to be 26" in diameter, so I cut down my shims to 8 1/2"long with a miter saw and laid out my first round of sunbursts.

After placing them where I wanted, I hot glued them to the 2 floral rings and then began a second round of the sunbursts.  These were glued as the second layer, and I continued until I had about 4 layers.

Then I spray painted it gold (more of an antiqued look, not so garish-gold) and let it dry over night.

I glued the mirror tile to the center with this really smelly glue for mirrors/glass, and then stood back to admire my work!

This is when I realized that the mirror would not work for above my bed.  Oops.  It was just too rustic looking for what I was going for in the bedroom.  However, it does look spectacular above the mantle in the basement!  What do you think?  Have you tried making a sunburst mirror lately?

It's official

Well, I did it!  I have started a blog (finally!) and hope that this will be a great outlet for me to share my domestic projects and musings about design, and anything else I find intriguing or worth sharing.  Please bear with me as I am new to this whole blogging thing.  I'm sure I will make lots of mistakes, but it's a learning process and my goal in this is to share my passion and excitement about interior design with anyone else who wants to listen.  Like the name of this blog states, I love *lovely* things and making the ordinary in life a little more extraordinary.  Every home can be beautiful and original without spending a fortune, which is the mission I am on with my own house (my husband may disagree with me there....). After all, isn't everything in life a little better if the setting is beautiful?  I think so.  If you agree, welcome to my blog! I hope you will enjoy my little posts about things I find inspiring and beautiful, and I would love to hear what you think.
